According to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe, Josh Beckett has been placed on the 15 day DL due to a shoulder inflammation. Pitcher Clayton Mortensen was added to the roster to fill Beckett’s roster spot.

Beckett is 4-7 so far this year, with a 4.14 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP. He’s been having a rocky season both with his pitching and with his health, and it seems like a smart move to shut him down for a bit to be cautious.

Clayton Mortensen pitched exceptionally for the Sox before being sent down, pitching 9.1 innings, while having a 0.96 ERA and a 0.64 WHIP. He was sent down because he had options, not due to his performance obviously.

It was already announced that reliever Franklin Morales will spot start for Beckett tomorrow, but there has been no update on who’ll be starting Beckett’s next missed start.
