Things keep getting more and more interesting between the Boston Red Sox and the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. As everybody knows, Franklin Morales beaned Luke Scott with a pitch in the 9th inning last night which caused an entertaining, benches clearing skirmish.
There has been a lot of bad blood between the two teams this year, and in previous years as well. In the Red Sox last series against the Rays, Adrian Gonzalez was hit by a pitch just for saying that he was going to hit a home run the next day after he had been slumping for a while. The Red Sox retaliated by beaning alleged racist, Obama birther, Boston/Fenway hating Luke Scott. The Rays retaliated by hitting Dustin Pedroia. And the trend continued last night.
The best part of this story is the post game quotes, championed by Bobby Valentine. Bobby V was quoted as saying “Boys will be boys” and “maybe it was the Ghost of Fenway Past remembering he bad-mouthed all our fans and our stadium, directing the ball at his leg.” It looks like we have a new frontrunner for “sports quote of the year” award. (if it exists)
Joe Maddon was also involved in some post-game trash talking. He said “We will respond, I promise you that,” about the incident, and went on to say the HBP was “carelessly incompetent” and “ridiculous, absurd, idiotic.” Whatever you say cranky Joe.
Needless to say, don’t miss tomorrows game (even with the Celtics game 7 going on, find a way to split screen it or something). Because the likelihood that we’re going to see a fistfight between Maddon and Valentine is at an all time high.
